Santa Fe Prepares for Potential Power Shutoff Amid High Wind Forecast

As strong winds are expected to hit Santa Fe on Thursday, March 6, 2025, city officials are asking residents to prepare for a possible planned power outage by PNM (Public Service Company of New Mexico). This type of outage, known as a Public Safety Power Shutoff (PSPS), helps reduce the risk of wildfires during extreme weather by preventing the electric system from sparking fires.

What is a Public Safety Power Shutoff (PSPS)?

A PSPS is a safety measure used during high-risk weather conditions, especially strong winds. It helps prevent wildfires by turning off power in areas where electrical equipment could spark fires. PNM explained during a press conference that the planned power shutoff could begin Thursday afternoon and last until Friday.

Who Could Be Affected?

Up to 35,000 customers in the Santa Fe area and the Pueblo of Cochiti could be impacted by the shutoff. However, PNM hasn’t made the final decision yet. Officials say they will decide by 11 a.m. on Thursday. Residents are encouraged to stay alert and update their contact information at PNM.com to receive alerts.

Weather Forecast and City Response

A high wind warning is in place for Santa Fe from 12 p.m. to 7 p.m. on Thursday. Wind gusts could reach up to 70 mph. In response, the City’s Emergency Operations Center has been activated to manage alerts and emergencies. Extra police and fire personnel will be available to respond quickly if needed.

What Residents Should Do to Prepare

1. Make an Emergency Plan
Plan ahead for food, water, and power. If you use medical devices that need electricity, arrange backup power or find a place with power in advance.

2. Charge All Devices
Keep phones, power banks, and medical equipment fully charged before the outage begins.

3. Gather Emergency Supplies
Stock up on flashlights, batteries, non-perishable food, bottled water, and cash. ATMs and card machines may not work during an outage.

4. Check On Loved Ones
Look out for elderly family members, neighbors, or anyone with special needs.

5. Traffic Tips During an Outage
If traffic lights go out, treat every intersection like a four-way stop. Drive carefully and stay patient.

6. Sign Up for Alerts
To get emergency alerts, sign up for Alert Santa Fe and follow updates from the City of Santa Fe and PNM on social media.

Changes to City Services

Santa Fe libraries, recreation centers, and senior centers may close early at 12 p.m. if the shutoff goes ahead. However, if power stays on, they’ll remain open, except for the GCCC pool, which will stay closed through March 7.

Santa Fe Municipal Court will close at 1 p.m. on Thursday, March 6, 2025. Trash and recycling will follow the regular schedule, but residents are asked not to put recycling bins out on Thursday if possible, due to the strong winds.

The Santa Fe Regional Airport will remain operational with the help of generators.

Important Contacts

For emergencies, call 9-1-1.
For downed power lines, call PNM at 888-342-5766.
Do not call 9-1-1 for updates on power outages—use the PNM outage map or social media instead.

High winds and fire risks are serious concerns for Santa Fe this week. While the PSPS may or may not happen, city officials and PNM want residents to be ready just in case. Take time now to charge devices, collect supplies, and make sure your emergency plan is in place. Staying informed, alert, and prepared can help keep everyone safe during this potential power shutoff.
